I love this content by Pašek Peter—it’s an excellent lesson in understanding investment evaluation. My community is English-speaking, so I’m sharing a translation of it. Keep up the great work, Peter! Peter wrote: ...I thought about what kind of return I would require if I invested some euros in the mining business in this country {Ethiopia}. Risk-free investments over a 10-year horizon in euros are somewhere around 2.4% when looking at 10-year German bonds. When I looked at the current "equity premium" of this African country, it is at the level of 14.67%. This is basically the annual expected appreciation of an investor in an average equity investment in this country, taking into account the risk of the country as such. Of course, this is the amount required above the level of the interest rate for a risk-free investment, as I described above. However, it is true that each industry has a different relative level of risk. This relative level of risk is expressed by default using the so-called beta coefficient. For example, it is at the level of 1.13 for the mining business in the "emerging market." In practice, this means that when investing in the mining business in Ethiopia, I would require an annual appreciation of each euro invested at the level of 2.4% + 1.13 × 14.67% = 18.97%. However, this would only apply if it is a completely debt-free company that finances its activities solely from its own resources. The second assumption is more important: as an investor, I would need to be significantly diversified, having invested my savings in a lot of other companies. This way, the only risk I would want to "treat" with my required return is the risk of the Ethiopian market. However, if I were an undiversified investor and put most of my savings into this African adventure, then I would also need to account for the level of risk of the particular company as such. This risk can only be diversified by investing across different companies from the same or different lines of business. The data shows that just over 21% of the risk of mining companies is explained by the market. The rest of the risk is specific to the company, and as a non-diversified investor, you need to take this risk into account in the required return on invested capital. In practice, this translates into an increase in relative risk from 1.13 to 5.32. This means that an undiversified investor should demand up to a staggering 80 cents a year for every euro invested in Ethiopia. It seems like a lot, and it really is, but the risks of countries should not be underestimated in practice and should be "priced into" your investment. So, as you can see, the difference between 19% and 80% is huge. It is determined by the risk of the market and whether, as an investor, I have my investments spread out or I put it all on one card. Fossil fuel subsidies are literally a dead-end, but Slovakia continues walking. Klimatická koalícia, Priatelia Zeme - CEPA and Greenpeace Slovakia are objecting against continued tax exemptions for coal and gas. Main conclusions 61 Albanian municipalities extend beyond the urban category. They include rural, mountainous, coastal, remote areas, where a mixture of urban and rural features coexist, with populations that tend to shrink into small units. Apart from the municipality of Tirana, where the trend for population growth is evident, and the municipality of Durrës, which has a lighter trend of population growth, the other municipalities in all 12 regions have a population decline. These data will be clearer once the results of the 2023 Census are published. Development challenges are more often found in non-urban areas than in urban areas that are more developed for natural reasons, but also from the concentration of investments such as “Urban Renaissance”. Weak local economy and fewer employment opportunities are observed throughout the municipalities, lack of access to essential services, low connectivity, environment and nature not protected, assets and natural capital are not being used usefully, the agricultural sector is not well supported and financed, preventive measures against natural hazards are insufficient. Despite the above-mentioned issues, the municipalities and their territories undoubtedly represent places of opportunity, such as in tourism, (a sector which marked a significant progress and this is thanks to the good work of the municipalities in general and especially of the 11 coastal municipalities), ecosystem, renewable energy, biodiversity, well- being, etc. Lack of vision and strategies for local economic development based on an integrated approach that emphasizes cross-sectoral policy, multi-level, multi-stakeholder and community-led governance….
